The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that salient changes in the bodily state are processed as signals of whether a situation is good or bad and guide an individual to avoid potential adverse.The Somatic-marker hypothesis (SMH) was first proposed by Demasio (1996), to explain the process of decision-making, while incorporating the role of emotion. This hypothesis developed after working with neurological patients who had damage to the prefrontal region, specifically in the ventral and medial regions, and presented severe impairments in decision making abilities (Damasio, 1979, 1994).The somatic marker hypothesis as connected and related to the functions of working memory are also explained by Damasio (1999), who argues that ventral regions of pre frontal cortex support decision making based on somatic markers whereas as dorsal regions of the pre frontal cortex support working memory functions (Jameson, 2004 Toplak et al 2010 Damasio, 1996).
